In 2019, the Nieuwe Instituut – the Dutch museum for architecture, design and digital culture – introduced the museum world to a slightly unconventional way of guided tours: the Detours.

Given by Detour Guides, the Detours are based on the unique artistic perspectives of this group of creatives. Each Detour is different, as each one is designed based on the disciplines of each individual Detour Guide. Detours can therefore be very diverse, yet consistent in format as it always involves group interactions and a creative assignment.  

In the Detour Guide Guide, we share all our learnings, tips and tricks, and give you the tools to start such a programme within your own institution.
